Why we want to Limit Communication during Exercise

Did you know…

Have you ever been in the middle of an exercise, things were going fine and then all of a sudden you could barely stand up because you lost your balance?

Many people refer to this as the “John effect”… because it often happens when I’m walking by either to stop and greet someone or make a sarcastic comment (usually the latter).

There’s actually a lot of science behind this and in a nutshell, our brains can’t focus on more than one thing at a time meaning when you focus your attention on whatever wisecrack I’m making, you aren’t going to be able to balance as well or focus on your body moving through space.

What does this mean for you…

When you’re performing an exercise that requires a high level of balance or coordination, you’ll be able to perform the exercise better the more you can drown out the music and others talking around you.

One suggestion I tell people is to pick a spot on the floor about 4 to 8 feet in front of you and focus on that one spot.

When performing exercises that don’t require a ton of focus and concentration such as riding the bike or slamming the ropes, those are the times you can chat it up with your neighbor… assuming you’re able to breathe 😉

Moral of the story… to improve your balance and coordination, tune everything out when performing exercises that require a high level of focus.
