The Brutal Reality Of Making Progress

Had a tough conversation a couple of days ago in the gym about making progress that sparked this message…

I told someone they will likely never “feel” like they’re making progress in a lot of ways.

I wasn’t trying to sound negative and the keyword here is FEEL.

Do I believe they’ve been making progress and will continue to do so? Heck ya! They’re rockstar that shows up consistently ready to put in the work.

However, progress generally comes in such small increments that we often don’t notice.

There’s a good chance you’re never going to step in front of a mirror and think, “oh my gosh, I look so much better than yesterday.”

The same is true when someone goes up 5 lbs on an exercise or loses 1/2 lb in a week. These things add up over time but when you’re in the middle of the journey it’s hard to see what’s happening.

My reason for sharing this is…

More than likely you’ll never feel like you’re making good enough progress. That’s perfectly normal human behavior. You’re never going to wake up and notice a night and day difference from the day before.

Here’s what I suggest you do to combat this…

First, you gotta trust the process. You have to believe that what you’re doing is going to make you better over time.

Next, step back and look at things through a wider lens of time such as comparing where you are today vs 6 to 12 months ago.

Some days are going to be harder than others to motivate yourself. Remember, one step at a time.
